(Spoiler: it’s both — and that’s why it’s brilliant.)

People often stumble into celebrancy.

They’re Googling “career change after 40,” or “jobs that feel worthwhile,” or they’ve been to a wedding or funeral and thought, “Hang on… who’s that person at the front doing such a brilliant job?”

Or, conversely: “Hmmm, that was a bit ‘meh’. I’m sure I could do better…”

Celebrancy is absolutely a career move. But if you’re only there for the cash, it’s probably not going to be sustainable for you.

Yes, money’s important and we all need to put dinner on the table. But this is a job that comes with more…

More emotional investment.
More responsibility.
More reward.
And more fulfilment.

For most celebrants, it’s definitely a calling alongside being their career –  this is Sue Havenhand who is one of our Celebrants!

The Calling Bit

Celebrancy is one of those jobs that draws people in because it means something.

We’re talking:

  • Standing beside people on the biggest days of their lives — the joyful ones and the heartbreaking ones
  • Helping people feel seen and heard
  • Telling stories that truly matter
  • Creating moments that stick in the memory forever

Kate T and Kate D have had strangers hug them in supermarkets because they remembered a ceremony. They’ve been invited to anniversary parties and funerals for people they married a decade before.

This isn’t just a job you clock in and out of. It’s personal.

The Career Bit

But let’s not sugar-coat it: celebrancy is a job. You should absolutely expect to charge properly for what you do — and make a living from it.

As a celebrant, you’re a self-employed professional. That means:

  • Managing your own diary
  • Handling clients
  • Writing, rehearsing, delivering ceremonies
  • Running a business — marketing, pricing, contracts, boundaries (the whole shebang)

We’ve met people who thought celebrancy was a lovely hobby… right up until they realised:

  • It takes work to build a reputation
  • You need to keep learning and growing
  • You have to promote yourself so people can actually find you

At Match and Dispatch, our celebrant training is designed to help you build a career, not just a pastime.

Because while this work is deeply meaningful, it should also pay your bills.

Balancing Both

Here’s why celebrancy is so special:

It’s meaningful and practical.
It’s creative and professional.
It’s flexible enough to fit around life and solid enough to become a real business.

Kate T and Kate D are proof. They’re still working celebrants with busy diaries — and they love this job as much today as when they started

They’ll tell you:

  • It can give you freedom
  • It can be sustainable
  • It can feel utterly brilliant

…as long as you go in with your eyes open.

How Do You Know If It’s For You?

Ask yourself:

  • Do I love working with people, even when emotions run high?

  • Can I juggle creativity with practical planning?

  • Do I want work that feels like it matters?

  • Am I willing to build a business, not just do the fun bits?

If that’s you — then celebrancy might just tick every box you didn’t know you had.
