Is It Burnout or Time to Train as a Wedding and Funeral Celebrant?

(When your job feels like a trap and your brain starts whispering “what if…?”)

You know that feeling when your laptop powers up and your soul powers down?

When Sunday night rolls around and instead of relaxing, you’re Googling “career change after 40” and “quiet jobs with no spreadsheets”?

Yeah. That.

If you’ve ever typed “how do you become a celebrant?” at 1am with biscuit crumbs in your bra, you’re in the right place.

Because here’s the truth: you might be burnt out.
Or you might just be done with a job that no longer fits.

Burnout or Breakthrough?

We’re taught to keep going. To push through. To “be resilient” — which, let’s face it, usually translates to “keep doing ten people’s jobs while dying inside.”

But burnout isn’t weakness. It’s your inner fire alarm going NEE-NAW.
Your brain, body, and possibly your dog are all trying to tell you: something has to change.

So maybe it’s not burnout. Maybe it’s a breakthrough.

Maybe it’s time to train as a celebrant.

But What Is a Celebrant, Though?

A celebrant is someone who creates and leads bespoke ceremonies — like weddings, funerals, and vow renewals.
(Not the boring kind. The good kind. The kind people actually remember.)

Celebrants work directly with clients to tell their stories, honour their people, and create something genuinely meaningful.

If you’ve ever thought, “I could do a better job than that registrar who rushed through it in 12 minutes flat,” — you’re probably right.

The Career Change You Didn’t Know Existed

Training to be a wedding celebrant and/or funeral celebrant might not be on the average school careers form, but it should be.

Because this is real, flexible, emotionally rich work that fits around your life.

It’s a role for:

People who love stories,

People who love people,

People who’ve worked in education, healthcare, social work, HR, or any role where you’ve had to keep a straight face while chaos swirls around you.

And yes — you can become a celebrant in the UK without moving to Glastonbury or lighting incense professionally.

OK But… Can I Actually Do This?

We get this all the time.

“Can I really make a living as a celebrant?”
“Am I too old?”
“Too quiet?”
“Too normal?”

And our answer is always: not only can you do it — you’ll probably be brilliant at it.

We (Kate T and Kate D) both changed careers to become celebrants. We built Match and Dispatch so that other people could do the same — with proper training, no fluff, no nonsense, and no chanting under the full moon.
(Unless you want to – in which case, we’re secretly a bit jealous!)

 What You Need to Know

If you’re thinking about becoming a celebrant, you’ll want to look for:

  • Wedding Celebrant & Funeral Celebrant training – UK based and led by people with real-life experience.
  • A celebrant course that covers both ceremony skills and how to get booked.
  • A way to train as a wedding or funeral celebrant that works around your life (kids, job, chaos and all).
  • Support beyond the training — not just “thanks and good luck!”
