(Spoiler: It’s not as complicated — or as woo-woo — as you might think)

So you’ve been quietly Googling “celebrant jobs” and “how to become a celebrant in the UK,” hoping to find a sign that says, “YES, THIS IS A REAL JOB AND YOU CAN ACTUALLY DO IT.”

Good news. It is. And you can.

Becoming a celebrant isn’t about joining a mysterious secret society or suddenly becoming a different person. It’s about learning how to tell stories, hold space, and create moments that mean something.

Here’s how it works — in plain English, no jargon, no incense.

First: Decide What Kind of Celebrant You Want to Be

In the UK, celebrants usually work in one or both of these areas:

  • Weddings – creating bespoke, non-legal ceremonies that feel personal, fun, emotional, and completely them.
  • Funerals – working with families to honour someone’s life with real care, clarity, and dignity (no dusty scripts or shoehorned-in poems).

Some people do both. Some focus on one. Either way — this is proper, meaningful work.

Second: Find the Right Celebrant Course (Seriously, This Matters)

There’s no one official path. Celebrancy isn’t regulated in the UK — which means you don’t need a licence or a formal qualification… but you absolutely do need proper training.

Because standing at the front of a ceremony and delivering a script you actually wrote yourself? That takes skill, confidence and practice — especially when people are crying / laughing / throwing confetti in your direction.

Look for a celebrant training course that:

  • Covers both the ceremony work and the business side
  • Offers flexible options to fit around your real life
  • Doesn’t try to sell you a dream where you instantly earn 50k a year doing barefoot weddings in Ibiza
  • Is run by people who still actually do the job (👋 hi, that’s us)

What About Celebrant Training Online?

Online celebrant courses are a brilliant option — as long as they’re well-structured and properly supported.

At Match and Dispatch, our online celebrant course is designed to:

  • Let you train in your own time (around kids, jobs, life admin, and that weird dog phase some of us had)
  • Give you feedback, support, and real interaction (not just a PDF and a pat on the head)
  • Set you up to become a celebrant UK-based with the skills to actually get booked

You can start slow. You can build confidence. And you won’t have to remortgage your house.

“But I’m Not… [Insert Self-Doubt Here]”

Too old? Too quiet? Too normal?

Honestly — none of that matters.

Some of the best celebrants we’ve trained came to us in their 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s and beyond.
Some had worked in teaching, nursing, HR, customer service, social work, or raised a family full-time.
Some had never written a thing since school and now write ceremonies that make everyone cry (in a good way).

You don’t have to be anything other than yourself — just with a bit of training, support and a well-stocked folder.
